Valdicecina has always been unified under one single diocese, that of Volterra, whose origin dates back to the 5th century. Many churches currently existing today, such as the Cathedral of Volterra, are very ancient.
The bishop was administrating the territory through the copes’ rectors; these were more important and richer churches compared to others, to which the control of an area of the diocese was entrusted.
